Bellvitge

A 211-bed university residence located on a University of Barcelona (UB) site in the Bellvitge neighborhood of L’Hospitalet de Llobregat.

Set within a complex of public service plots designated for public facilities—the Bellvitge University Hospital, the UB Bellvitge Campus, the Municipal Sports Center, etc.—the building is divided into two volumes of different heights to spread out the staircase and soften its urban presence. Both respond to the alignments of the surrounding area: the main volume, aligned with the residential blocks of Bellvitge, and the other, shorter volume, connected to the adjacent day center, thus creating a transitional element between the two urban staircases.

The building is located at the rear of the lot and adopts an “L”-shaped configuration that defines and characterizes the open space between the building and the street. This layout not only creates the void but also delimits and protects it, providing it with a staircase and transforming it into a space designed to host both sports activities and communal uses, functioning interchangeably as a court or an agora.

The entire ground floor and part of the basement are designated as common areas, while the upper floors house both single and double rooms. The building’s roof is reserved for utilities, and the two terraces on the lower blocks are for community use.
